Thirty small savings groups. Over 400 women. More than TSh 120 million pooled and invested in small businesses in just two years. Meet the women quietly transforming their community.

Every Tuesday morning in Mwananyamala's Tandale ward, a group of 15 women gathers in a small room behind St. Francis church. They arrive with their contribution envelopes, their record books, and their stories of the week. Within an hour, they have reviewed their collective savings, approved two loan applications, and heard a 20-minute business skills lesson from a volunteer facilitator.

This is one of 30 women's savings groups that Passion Society Organization has helped establish and support since 2022. Collectively, these groups have over 400 active members and have pooled more than TSh 120 million — approximately $45,000 USD — in revolving loan funds.

The model is simple and time-tested. Each member contributes a fixed weekly amount (typically TSh 3,000–15,000), and the pooled funds are made available as low-interest loans to members. Loans are used for business start-ups, school fees, medical emergencies, and home improvements.

"Before the group, when something happened, I had no one to turn to. Now I know that 14 other women have my back," says Mary Zawadi, a charcoal seller who used her third group loan to buy a cart that doubled her daily capacity.

Passion Society's role is to provide training, governance support, and linkages to formal financial institutions. We run a quarterly financial literacy curriculum that covers budgeting, record-keeping, savings habits, and business planning. Members who complete the curriculum are eligible for top-up loans from our microfinance partner.

The ripple effects extend beyond money. Group members report stronger social networks, higher confidence, reduced experience of domestic violence, and greater involvement in community decision-making. When women lead, communities follow.

We aim to establish 20 more groups by the end of 2026. If you would like to sponsor a savings group — covering its first year of operational support — the cost is $500 USD.
